Alright, it's solved even though I don't know why.
I erased the folders and DB and started from scratch,
this time in this order:
• install wordpress
• install/activate gantry framework plugin
• install/activate gantry hydrogen theme
• install/activate Timber plug-in
Worked like a charm.
