HTTP ERROR 500

Every time I try to update plugins I get an error that basically says the site can’t be accessed. Usually, when it’s done it lets me back in and I can access the admin area.

This time I could not. I am getting an http error 500 and cannot access my admin area to diagnose the problem and try to fix it. I can’t even access my plugins to deactivate those which I believe are posing the problem.

What can be done without access to this area ( Other parts of the site do work, so a reader can come to the blog from an external link etc and read a post)?

I was trying to avoid going the htaccessfile route since I’ve been reading, if done incorrectly you can mess some things up.
